Your comment was that the grid works exactly the same as a listbox. I challenged you on that claim. If it doesn't work EXACTLY the same, it will confuse the user.

I'd go with an ActiveX control that can do the coloring before trying to make the grid work. It will probably take less work, have less code to maintain, and cost less both short and long term.
