FWIW, Tannen is a linguist with a long history of studying talk in an academic way as well as writing about it for popular audiences.

The underlying issues have a lot to do with how we socialize boys and girls. As I mentioned up front, the book is not new. It's about 20 years old. I'd be very interested in seeing new research in this area, to see whether the issues are still as significant for people raised more recently.
