When I first started going to golf tournaments -before Arnold Palmer made the sport so popular - for most tournaments there were no ropes and the gallery walked the fairways with the players.
The players' language was pretty earthy and some of them - Sam Snead was one of the most vigorous- were hitting on women spectators non-stop (usually with good results.)
Since the sport has become popular on TV they keep the audio off the players and separate the gallery purposely.
Part of the job of the booth announcers is to sanitize the dialogue. Virtually nothing is "real time" - someone has looked at it and said OK before we get to see or hear it.
If we could hear what the guys in the NBA or NFL were really saying out there the game might be more fun for us, but it might not be "family" fare.
Anyone who does not go overboard- deserves to.
