I could have said U.S. citizens, but that seemed a bit formal. I wasn't aware that people elsewhere in The Americas were prone to call themselves "Americans". I also wasn't sure that people from the Caribbean thought of themselves as a part of the continent. I don't know Spanish, but I gather that some Latin Americans might call us "yanquis", but people from the southern U.S. reject the term "yankee".
