When MS purchased Fox, a frequent talking point was MS wanting to use some of Rushmore for future database efforts.

Rushmore had bitmap index technology, and the Columnstore Index (and Vertipaq, which is making its way across several MS efforts) optimizes high cardinality column values (like foreign keys in a fact table) using some sort of bitmap as well.

I have no idea if Rushmore wound up playing a part in MS SQL and self-service BI offerings these days, just speculation.
