I have a site that started complaining that their CDX table with at least ten tags, some with multiple fields nears the 2 GB limit after several days of production. A search suggests that this is an issue with dBASE compatible tables. The suggestion is to pack the table and re-index regularly. With 24 hour production much of the week, getting exclusive access to the table is problematic. I currently re-use deleted records, but I've seen references that the tags in the CDX file are orphaned for deleted records and can only be recovered by deleting all tags and re-indexing the table. I only use free tables. System was begun nearly 30 years ago, but DBCs were considered but rejected for some reason. This is an inherited application.
Is this correct?
What if instead of deleting records, I re-used them by replacing any or all of the fields with new values? Would this adversely affect performance?
TIA.
