Apparently you missed the announcement. .NET is now mostly open source and fully embraces web standards such as JSON. That's not going to change unless web development at large moves to something else.

JSON is only coming into being and mostly in the new version of VS. The way MS changes their technology, I might as well skip learning JSON and wait for the next "thing" :)
