What Barbara said! One of the few things I liked about going from DOS to Windows™ was the fact that very annoying blinking dodahs were virtually eliminated by the Windows™ architecture.
If you
must blink something -- blink the background, not the foreground. Most users find this less obtrusive. I usually just toggle between an opaque and transparent background style. This is enough "movement" to alert the uer without driving him/her nuts.
