Lately democracy (in most of its versions) has shown how bad it can be - even if it is the best solution.

IMO it does come down to having checks and balances in place and just hope that the things you view as idiotic will be softened in time. And yes, it seems ludicrous to us, but at the same time driving well above 200km/H seems perfectly natural to me and ludicrous to most other nations. Same way I think the nordic way to behave in sauna is "better" than the sauna traditions existing in Turkey, Hungary and similar places (and the tradition, going back to the romans, is probably older there) and there are even more variances - just think of "stateside" and japanese for instance.

And while the swiss popular referenda sometimes result in plebiscites going against my opinion, having such as an established way to decide things would be much better than the ugly spectacle of asking people to "decide" on offers not even on the table anymore to get better bargaining position like in Greece and call such tactics democratic...

On buying influence: are you that certain that lobbyism does not exist in your state? I would prefer a second body where voting power is given via taxes paid and making lobby actions non tax deductible plus check those party affilliated foundations with more scrutiny, so that pure head counts have it more difficult to vote for panem et circenses. And yes, that would give shareholders of companies paying taxes in that country voting rights not evenly distributed. The state (or country, for the EU for instance) voting, often seen as a correcting chamber, is IMO even more skewed.

>I'm really glad that my country has a completely different political system than they have over there. Here you can't as a citizen buy yourself political power or influence. And if someone tried, yes it has happened, they have been laughed at so much that they have decided to withdraw completely. It's up to the political parties to decide whom gets the positions, and it's actually illegal to give money above a relatively low level to the political parties. To make sure nothing illegal happens, the political parties are checked thoroughly since they have to show whom they get the money from and how much.
