thank you Marcia. we applied the clickyes method and it does take care of the immediate problem.
there are still a couple of things we are working on however - first and foremost what caused the issue to suddenly rear its head in the first place - since it has been working for years. I went to Outlook->File->Options->Trust Center->Trust Center Settings->Programmatic Access - and found the affected computer shows that the antivirus status is invalid. Which I suspect is the cause for the all this. We are waiting on that one.
Secondly I am wondering, since your application did solve the issue, whether there is a more direct way to deal with the issue through outlook automation programming route.
I will see if anyone comes up with anything on those two fronts. (I will place a 'solution' to your reply Marcia but did not want to kill the thread to other suggestions quite yet.) many thanks for getting our errant computer back on track though. I have not had time to look into CDO and am not familiar with it - but something I will have a look at for long term solution.

>What I eventually did was to replace my Outlook automation stuff with CDO to send e-mail. Of course, this was over 10 years ago, so I do not know what has been done to disable CDO since then....
