Hrm... almost sounds like what I had to do to get the upgrade from Windows 3.0 to Windows 3.1 to stop crashing on me. I had to remove the video card-specific driver and switch to the generic VGA driver supplied with Windows. Once I did that, the update would run to completion -- otherwise the update process would crash partway through, leaving Windows inoperable (lucky for me, I'd backed up the harddisk *before* the install, so I could roll back to the previous configuration). Once I'd figured it was a problem with the video driver, the upgrade took only 15 minutes to complete -- but it took me 3 hours of repeated attempts, crashes, and restores before I'd figured out the solution.
