Once I did that, the update would run to completion -- otherwise the update process would crash partway through, leaving Windows inoperable (lucky for me, I'd backed up the harddisk *before* the install, so I could roll back to the previous configuration). Once I'd figured it was a problem with the video driver, the upgrade took only 15 minutes to complete -- but it took me 3 hours of repeated attempts, crashes, and restores before I'd figured out the solution.

I wouldn't be surprised if the same code is still lingering around :)
