Wouldrecommend asking the previous dev what books he drew on when deciding the architecture of the app. It might be old Ado.Net (possibly the Screppa book), Entity fwk or perhaps even the Hibernate stuff - then you read the stuff relevant for the project.

Familiarity with Java will help you more in C# projects than C++/C knowledge.
