Rather than disconnect the old one I just added the new one and told CrashPlan to back up to it. So, now I have two local backups to restore from as well as the cloud. It's best to restore locally if possible versus the Cloud which will be much slower.

Again, there's a huge advantage to be able to recover from a physical device versus the Cloud. Locating like this off premises would help in case of a big disaster like a house fire where your local external drives get toasted.

Thanks for the recommendation!

Another way to achieve off-premise is to use a bank safety deposit box. You can't access it while it's there so it can get out of date, but it's decent protection against a major disaster.
