For your first problem, my only advice is to make sure that you don't have any nonexistent entries in your Set Path list.

For the network card problem, find it in Device Manager, and select Properties. On the Power Management tab, uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". I have seen cases where the setting in Device Manager overrides the similar setting in Power Options.
