To (over)simplify things, a network share (logically) looks like a local harddisk, and (if things work as expected) the fact that it is a network drive is relatively transparent to the user and software utilizing the network share. The shared drive could be hosted another Windows computer, a Linux box, a Macintosh, or Novell server, etc.
