When I did it, I live in Akron, Ohio and went to state universities. Also, there are loads of community colleges where the tuition is even cheaper. As a matter of fact, I met a couple of bartenders in Akron and in Arkansas that were doing just that - working their way through school. So apparently it can still be done today if one has reasonable expectations about where to live and where to attend school....

$1 plus tips though - which can add up. I know several bartenders that make well over $250 per shift, and I don't know any that average out to less than the minimum wage.
