>Bottom line: I'm all for events that encourage those caring for kids to come to the school. It shows kids that parents think school is important. It engages the parents. Everything I've ever heard indicates that in general, getting parents into the building is a win. But we should design such programs so that kids who are already "others" in some way aren't reminded once again of their otherness.

And here we get to the root of the problem - artificial actions intended to remove the "being offended", which only wind up infringing on others.
This was the fundamental issue and opposition on gay marriage. I have never had a problem with gay marriage at all - but I understand the arguments from the conservatives on how it might wind up being a tool/weapon against traditional values. There's plenty of evidence to support it. Everyone wants to run to the feds when they feel like they've been offended - and right now, the feds are all-to-eager to perpetuate this folly.
Another example is the recent letter from the DOJ to the state of NC regarding HB2 - despite numerous legal precedents in the past that Title VII does not protect against discrimination on the basis of gender identity alone.
