Maybe it has more to do with how America works and not American politics works. America is such a big country in terms of population, geography, ethnic and racial groups, economic backgrounds, etc. etc. The one who is "the best candidate" for one group is "the worst" for another. So the "best candidate" is a relative term. I though Mitt Romney was very good in so many ways but the left didn't like him. So there will never be "the best candidate."
Actually, I believe that it was the right who did not like Romney. Fewer members of the republican base got out to vote for Romney in 2012 than voted for McCain in 2008. Sometimes you just gotta hold your nose and vote for the lesser of 2 weevils. In 2012, it should have been anybody but Obama...
