We have five types of data people at Quicken Loans:
Database Administrator: Keep SQL running, handle backups, etc.
Database Engineer: Design databases, write stored procs
Data Warehousing: Setup and maintain data cubes, etc
Business Intelligence: Mine the data from various sources
Data Architect: Handles big picture database design, recommends databases (Ex: SQL vs NoSQL)
>Last time I had contact with these folks in person, they were doing both jobs. And since I'm doing part of both, the distinction hasn't affected me. I guess in places where they'd hire those, they'd probably have the responsibilities split.
