>>But what has he done for anyone else that didn't benefit him at the same time. Have you been following the research into his so-called charitable contributions, where it turns out that basically, he never gives his own money?

>You're asking me to validate/defend Trump. I won't. He's been a businessman of some type all his life. He has never really been into charity.

>In my line of work, I've done plenty of things to help other people. I can name many people whom I've helped to find jobs, or to get better jobs. I also gained benefit in some manner from the process. There's nothing wrong with that.

>Candidly, I'm always suspicious of scenarios where someone talks about giving without some benefit. There's a difference between benevolence and altruism - I'm a big advocate of the former....not so much of the latter.
Having been raised by a mother whose life was saved by people who did it for no benefit to themselves (
https://medium.com/@TamarEGranor/my-mother-survived-but-millions-died-today-s-refugees-deserve-better-62249e4fcfcd), I watched her work every day of her life to make the world a better place for those who came after her. I don't do as much as she did, but I do plenty of things that don't directly benefit myself, but do make other people's lives better.
FWIW, one of my favorite pieces of Jewish teaching is a quote from Hillel:
"If I am not for myself, who will be for me? But if I am only for myself, who am I? If not now, when?"
It guides my life.
