On the question of a total summary band...if this explanation doesn't suffice, I can show you next week....basically, you go down to the row group section (at the bottom of the page)....select the highest level group (or detail band, if the report has no groups), and select the dropdown out to the right. In the popup menu, you'll see an option for "Add total", and you can add a total line at the bottom of the report (or the top)

Again, if that isn't clear, I'll show you.

On the last item, I'm not sure I follow....when you say "don't always start", do you mean vertically or horizontally?
