>>I probably have more in common with someone in Sweden than with someone in Alabama or even southern New Jersey.

I met some fine people in Birmingham, Alabama. But I also saw some old slave housing still in use.

>>We might think that it's a good idea to make those people do things our way, but that kind of thinking is the height of arrogance and it's what got Trump elected.

I "get" why some HRC supporters feel dismay that she won the popular vote and still got trumped. But pretty much any system with electorates can disconnect popular vote from victory. The US is a bit different in deliberately weighting some votes more highly than others. I don't think you'll get anybody volunteering to copy that and when systems do change, usually it's to introduce party voting or similar mechanisms so that people still get to vote for local reps but party seats are determined by its share of the popular vote. Also worth noting that Prime Ministers aren't voted on by the public at all, but are selected by the winning party/coalition.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
