But what you call socialism absolutely has helped to level the playing field. Public schools are socialism (by some people's definition), but most Americans would agree that they're an important investment in the future. The electrification of rural America was socialism by that kind of definition, but there aren't very many who think it was wrong.

Paying for college for veterans was socialism, too, by that kind of definition. It was a key factor in making this country primarily middle class.
