>Ah, but we live in an imperfect world. So Microsoft will call three different things a cursor. It will call a folder a directory for years and then call it a folder even though it was NIH. It will call its file browser an explorer, of windows first then of files, even though it can't explore any of them. It will call the zone at the end of its taskbar a system tray, then call it notification area. It will call many things queryThis and queryThat, regardles of all of them being unrelated to queries.

I once complained (on xkcd's forum) on the general ambiguity of english language (and Microsoft's misnomers only ascerbate the problem), to which the moderator told me that it has all the tools it needs to express oneself unambiguously. Which proves my point - it has them because it needs them, but the problem is in the speaker, who is unaware of the need to use them.

Hello my friend, it is a long time since I have been on this forum.

When it comes to language, I speak the American form of the English language, German, Castilian, and a bit of Irish Gaelic. Now when it comes to language, from my limited experience I consider English to be the superior language of business and law. You see, the ambiguity which is normally encountered is excellent when it comes to deception and ignorance. If what you state has six different meanings then it is not unusual. If you must, allow the attorneys and courts to decide upon the meaning.

There was a time when I could not understand why Microsoft would change many important terms from version to version of its operating systems and applications. Then I found out that Microsoft often dismissed entire groups of workers and hired new ones. They have no standards to go by so employees do as they please with language.

Yes, the speaker is responsible for establishing the meaning of a word, and the listener is often ignorant of the intent of the speaker. The listener may not know the meaning of technical terms, but that could also be said of the speaker.

Microsoft uses “me”, and Apple uses “i”. Both are after your dollar!

If you want to “enjoy” the English language, then you should have to deal with speakers from India. We had a number of H1B's write technical documents and “on line help” for some of our applications.
