>>I remember laying into Mike Beane a bit about issues and regretted it when I heard the news about him.

I doubt Mike resented you. I had the privilege of meeting him when he accepted my invitation to a conference in New Orleans. I perceived a potential win-win re some business we had going with ongoing consultancy opportunities for him. He was interested but the clincher for him, was Bill Clinton speaking on healthcare at the conference. So the big moment duly came and they had a giant conference hall seating thousands, packed to overflowing with security guards denying latecomers because of fire regs limiting numbers to 10,000. Yes, it was a big conference and an unbelievable venue- I've never seen an indoor space so huge. Apart from that, Mike relished the Cajun food, took interest in the esoteric conference topics, helped erect and disassemble the booth, and was an all-around good guy and gentleman. Not once did he touch liquor in my presence. That's how I choose to remember him: as a very tall cheerful fellow who relished the opportunity to try some famous gumbo and was eager to see Clinton in person. FWIW, a lot of what Clinton had to say was very sensible, but he'd had his chance and hadn't managed to effect meaningful change.

So no, that isn't who I meant. If you don't know, don't worry... the person I'm speaking about hopefully can put the issue from her mind now, as should we all.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
