I also have a fairly "circuitous" route into programming - I started off in agriculture and then when doing a Master's in soybean breeding, I had to process tens of thousands of data points from my results - that got me started. Next job that I took (offfice manager, not even closely related), because I was the "new, young guy" who supposedly understood computers (more than the "old guys"), I got thrown into buying them for their office and then got into programming via "can you set up something to track...". I would suspect that a good many of us got into our line of work in a round about way. Anyhow, I enjoyed reading your article.
