In my household we practically stopped watching TV, except for a football (American) game on Sunday and the breaking news (like the hurricane we are experiencing now). 99% of watching my wife and I do on iPads. So for us to have uninterrupted watching experience (I just coined this acronym UWE :)), we simply need the power to the Cable Modem and the Router. Period. No computers or monitors are necessary.

The reason I would consider a 1K$ generator (which is very reasonable, I agree) is if the power outage is longer than a day or two. Which, fortunately, in this area (New England) we have not experienced since hurricane Gloria in 1985. Back then we lost the food in the refrigerator and that was about it.
