I am with you believing that 30-50% of military budget probably could be saved without risking safety of the US, also that (Trump is correct sometimes) Europe, Germany in particular should spend more.

But the big spending blocks are the money-for-nothing stuff: social security, food stamps, out of work, medicare/aid and so on.

Cut back spending on all programs for 20% by law, reserve half of the spending cuts to be spent by government again as outcome of political process. Still 10% saved and enough "distribution" work for politicians as newspeople to get exited about...

Repeat after each prez election, giving new prez room to manouver and also set new targets, not being crushed by previous vote-buying efforts grown into law unable to change ;-)

Let everybody NOT having an on-record-job paying SS and taxes do minimum-pay makeshift work:
those working under the radar and for cash only won't show up as they have no time and the ones currently to lazy to work as difference in money recived for effort spent in paid work will have to recalculate their ROI ;-)

Put ALL savings from that particular change into reducing the debt, as this area was responsible - after hitting GWB with a huge bill for invading Iraq without producing WMDs found there. (Let me dream a bit, ok?)

And yes, walk softly and carry a big stick was preferrable to drone-kill quite a few non-combatants and tweet loudly
