Both Git and Mercurial are popular choices with VFP developers. I use both. For the repository server, GitHub is the world's most popular but BitBucket is popular with VFP users as well; again, I use both. I don't think you can go wrong picking either set (Git and GitHub or Mercurial and BitBucket).
As for tools working with version control, I highly recommend FoxBin2PRG to convert VFP binary files to their text equivalents and vice versa:
