If the GOP thought it would come up empty then they would go ahead with the investigation. Furthermore one can agree that Kavanaugh himself should welcome such an investigation to clear his name and not have a little star next to his name in the history books if he's so innocent rather than go on FoxNews claiming to be a virgin alter boy. It would not be Kavanaugh subject to a 'cruel investigation' - that is reserved for his accusers.
