No need for an off-world colony.
Anyone who has been in a combat zone for a long period knows what it is to be deprived of "real" food.
I still don't take a fresh egg, or a fresh green vegetable for granted. Every time I eat them my enjoyment is enhanced by the recollection of the other stuff.
It kept us alive, but it was really awful.
