Bundling a simple version with Crucial MX 500 plus their great results was reason for me personally to go "all Crucial" when every machine went SSD here and siblingswhere - after testing the SSD waters with only 1 machine first, as I was afraid of loosing data.

A new product is released and gets great reviews, but then the manufacturer starts using different controllers or NAND flash, which sometimes reduces performance. They don't change the model number or revision so the consumer has no way to know what has happened.

Hi Al,
you are on the mark as usual. AFAIR Dmitry bought Samsung - and while I sing the praise for HW working well here as I do for Crucial and their MX series, if he has to care only for 1 - 3 machines it makes more sense to stay with Samsung to build personal routines necessary when real trouble comes along and not go for current top of contenders. "Good enough" as long as manufacturer is not in the bait and switch group , which Samsung clearly is not.

Found it interesting that when Crucial changed parts, it was to the benefit of the customer changing for better parts - at least according to our c't, which I trust in these matters as they also reported the bait$switch done by others.

Splurging nearly 200$ for Windows when most they do is shift the GUI - no. Splurge just for Backup program sporting more doodads than you ever need - no, esp. if they plan to lure you into recurring yearly payments.

Shelling out for new HW with a bundle of SW sized down to cover most backup needs (error free, linux boot for non booting SSD) which will steer a few $ to those backup devs even if I already have SW with license - no problem, ROI still good, chances of HW failure lessened a lot, fast backup disc gained via 15$ external USB3 case and offspring has licensed bootable backup SW as well: win-win-win on many fronts

regards
thomas
