If customer has control over label generation and it lands on flat surface,
I'd toss QR code into discussion, as it allows more data, or - more important -
redundancy / error recovery in smaller labels.

Trend to QR code has reasons...

So, the customer asked me to look into replacing the program and the scanner. The old scanner does not even connect to the desktop of Windows 10.
