I seriously think that he meant that. Look, a standard hour is 3,6ks... so his hours are shorter, as fits a consultant (now a smiley: :) ).
You should read some SF. AFAIR, several authors (Charles Stross, for one, but possibly Phillip Jose Farmer too) used metric seconds in space. So, it's about 40-60 years now. Calculate your age in megaseconds, you never know when your next metric birthday may be.
