Nigel,
I have the same situation, where I have to update SQL tables from VFP. At this point, it still takes several hours, but I'm updating quite a bit more data. One thing I did to increase the speed was to drop the clustered index before the update, and then re-create it after. This speeds up the process quite a bit, and the re-create doesn't take long at all.
