I'd support John's approach.
Running the extra toolbar, I think, will be complex for the user, but especially for you.
I generally also put a add/edit/delete... set of buttons under or beside the grid. You build a command group class to do this and place is nicely underneath so it looks just like the grid headings.
I can send a 'real' class to you if you like
