I'm home now and here are the settings on my w95 machines - these are the settings I religiously check on all my PCs.

In network on control panel I have:
Client for Microsoft Networks
Client for Netware Networks (installed for NT)
Dial-Up Adapter
PCI Ethernet Adapter
IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol->PCI Ethernet Adapter
NetBEUI -> PCI Ethernet Adapter
TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter

In the properties for IPX/SPX, I NEVER check the NetBIOS box!!
In the advanced page;
Frame Type=Ethernet.802.3
Network Address - different for each PC
Source Routing - 16 entry cache
On the NIC properties - NETBEUI is set as default protocol.

If this is all in order, give the cable a definite try!
