Are there any known situations where the text in memo fields disappears? When the DBF or FPT file is damaged? When indexes are damaged?

We have a rather large table where this started happening yesterday. It did not happen on all records accesed by the users, but on some. So far I have just packed the table to get rid of possible strange errors in the files themselves.
