Do you have a written agreement with this guy? If it is verbal, you may have a problem proving a contract -- your word against his sort of thing.
But you may still have a claim under the old common law theory of
quantum meruit which in effect states that if you perform work for a person who (1) knows you are performing the work, (2) permits you to do so, and (3) benefits from the work, then he owes the value of the benefit he received.
I have used this approach successfully several times for programmers who neglected to get it in writing.
Ask your lawyer about the availability of this cause of action in Florida.
