I didn't have a lot of time before...I have a few things to add:

This particular list was never sluggish in 3.0. The users have been instructed to make it known if any part of the system isn't performing well. Also, the users almost never use the mouse with this list. They type in the quote number and the selection bars automatically moves to the correct quote and they press to select. The bug was discovered by myself in my testing (I use the mouse).

And concerning better ways to select one item: I think this way has worked very well. If the users want to choose by quote number, they do what I said above. If they forget the quote number, they press a function key and the list is sorted by company name and they can do an incremental search by company name. But as I said earlier, I can only advise as to the options they have. The users are the people using the system and they make these types (ie. what type of UI they want) of choices quite frequently.
