What I use is a "driver", a table with the name of the latest version, and the "real" app. (My gratitude to Alan Biddle in Greensboro who suggested this.)

The driver looks in the table for the latest version number, then calls the "real" app. Of course this means that I have to edit the table.

The users get the next version when they log out. Maybe you could have something with a timer which checks for a new version and tells the users to log out and back in.
