still not having much luck, but here's some more info...

when my view only has rows from a single table, everything works fine. if i change the create sql view command and do a join to my second table without even selecting a single column from the second table then it no longer works like i expect. i can still change any column in the view that was derived from the first table. the column used in the join condition is the only one that won't update anymore.

i have noticed that after adding the code that does the join, if i use cursorgetprop() to see the UpdateNameList property, the column from my result set which is the FK and used in the join is no longer present.
