This is what a whole lot of people speculate, but it really doesn't make sense if thought through just a little more.

I'm guessing that dBASE still exists as a viable competitor to VFP, but I am not aware of anything else which is *current*.
Now SQL Server is expensive in both direct and hidden costs and is enough so to keep many (most, I would say) small to medium businesses *away* from SQL Server (or its cousins) as an alternative.
Small and medium business makes up the vast (make that VAST) majority of businesses *and* the area where there is still huge scope for deployment of computerized applications.

MS knows this and I am guessing that they push VB for that area. One day they will have to wake up and see the error of their ways in this regard.
