Bill is about right on the time ... NOT a really do-able trip, unless you're planning an extra day. I live in Santa Monica and I can tell you that the beaches are a mob scene on the weekends.

Also this time of year we get clouds until about 1PM at the shore.

Much better idea is to visit the desert surroundings. Also there is a tram up to Mt. Jacinto from Palm Springs -- like a Swiss tram. I was in Palm Springs in the summer with a temp of 110 degrees, and needed a jacket at the top of the mountain - 55 degrees there.
