New Features = Heavier... I agree this is the way it's traditionally been, i.e. JUST getting new features, and no efficiency improvements to offset the bloat.
One elegant definition of progress (by Buckminster Fuller I believe) is, doing more with less. This goal can benefit developers just as much as any other walk of life.
