>>Nothing earth-shattering, but I can guarentee you there will be a VFP 7, and they showed off a bunch of new stuff for the IDE that you'll like a great deal; imagine VFP's editor with Intellisense that would make Ken Levy happy, with most of the neat stuff from the CEE tools, and you'll have an idea of what they showed us. The demo wasn't rigged (ie stupid typos gave error messages and then stuff they showed off worked.

Lots of stuff involving command completion; nothing new demod as far as new internal features. OTOH< Ken Levy's VFPCOM session was a truly religious experience.

>What about stuff like native/better support for OLE-DB/ADO/SML? What about a View Designer that works? Better native tools to support a physical n-Tier application? Granted, I know it is still early, and they may not have had alot to show you, but if all they are adding is Editor Enahncements...

No a problem, they didn't show it in the KeyNote, but the capabilites of VFP6 SP3 in conjunction with VFPCOM should handle things well enough. The MTDLL support in SP3 makes life easier already. It's more a matter of what they could show that would be seen as a major improvement that isn't already present as improvements through SP# and VFPCOM. They did a 10 minute overview to show us some neat stuff from a devloper POV working with VFPO's IDE; this isn't scheduled as an interrim release. It's more a matter of reassuring all of us that they're working, and there's nothing to any rumors of VFP's imminent demise.

>Any idea when this would be out? I assume with Visual Studio 7.0? How hard will it be to move an app from 6.0 to 7.0? How about the ability to create subclasses of ALL classed in a VCX?

You're probably never going to see that; for example, Calvin explained that the new Session object is too lightweight to incluyde in a VCX, so yopu still subclass in code. It doesn't bother me IAC, since I write lots of non-VCX stuff, and don't mind it.

They showed us that they're working on it, and didn't try to hand us a lot of BS about when or what new things will be present. It's hard to show detailed internals stuff, but better integration with ADO/XML will of a certainty be there.

For once, MS didn't make promises that they can't keep - it'll be coming, but the details aren't out and about for public consumption. Besides, with SP3 and VFPCOM and a few other new toys, you've got more available than you might imagine now, like the VFP equivalent of a critical section. Try working with the new features of SP3 and VFPCOM, and you'd be surprised how much VFP6 has changed already.
