The problem is compounded by the fact that when I try to configure the Fox 2.6 odbc driver I get a message saying that it is no longer supported and has been replaced by the VFP driver.

Thanks Yves
Actually I found a couple of articles on msdn that indicates that your approach is the correct "workaround". However, even if I save the table (copy to) in fox2x format, I cannot open it as a datasource in Word. The problem is that although Word indicates that it has "MS Foxpro" connectivity, in fact the ODBC setup tool will not let me configure the driver. I get the message that it has been superceded by VFP's driver.

"Seems you can't there from here!"

Saving as type delimted works but, saving as anything is a cheesy workaround in a multi user environment, don't you agree?
