Thanks again, 127.0.0.1 doesn't work but I had some success with using "Besper01" being the IIs4 engine running on my main network server which is probably OK to get started on my learning curve. Still it's always a worry when you can't understand the simple things.
Perhaps I have caused myself a problem by doing a number of things at once.
I installed NT Work Station option pack on "Besper06"
I installed NT Server option pack on the Network server "Besper01"
I installed Front Page (via Office 2000) on the workstation Besper06
So I think I have the situation at present of not being able to connect to the much documented "locaHost" -- but being able to connect to the Network Server as Besper01.
Do you think that there are any future problems (shocks) if I just go ahead with developing a site using "Besper01". By the way the intention is to use the local network here for development and the production site will be a WWW site
regards
John Harriss

Also when I try to start a project in Visual Interdev 6, with "localHost", I get an error that the host cannot be found. IIS4 appears to be running ok . Do I have to make configeration changes somewhere ?

>>tcp/ip is installed ok. the funny thing is that I can link to the default home page that was automaticlly created during installation using IE5. I type in "http:/besper06/" (besper06 is my computer name), that seems to work but not "http:/localHost/" . Also I cannot start a project in Interdev 6 using "Besper06".
