Column.Sparse determines if the control you have access to in the property sheet is the one used to display data in all rows, or just the current one. Entering data into a control in a column whose sparse property is false should not affect the DATA entered in all rows, only the control used to display that data in rows other than the current.
I guess I am still a little unclear as to how you tied the sparse property to your problem...
